Back Online! 2 Old EPs

Two EPs, Radical, Intense and Awesome!! and Schizophonia Suite, both from 2008, are back on-line. "Radical" is a 10 song mashup beach party that ain't nuthin' but goofy fun. "It Is Such A Good Saturday Night" might be my fave, cramming the Bay City Rollers, the Dead Kennedys, Aaliyah, Wire, Bob Marley, Schooly D, Corona, and a '60s German ez-listening orchestra into 4 minutes.

"Suite," on the other hand, is a 5 track release of mashups/sound collages inspired by mental illness that is def. some of the weirder stuff I've ever done, so beware.

Here it is, at long last! 21 big hunks of mashup/sound collage goodness. Unreleased songs from unrealized projects, and previously uncollected compilation tracks..and probably some things that I didn't release for good reasons, heh heh. Since these were produced on a now-dead computer, I don't have the files for each song, hence, I'm listing each song's ingredients from memory. If I got anything wrong or incomplete, let me know, eh?

Lotsa rock 'n' roll with this batch, not as much weird thrift-store kitsch as previous RIAA releases, but there's still some silliness. And, of course, I reserve the right to reactivate RIAA whenever I feel like it. I'm planning to get into live instrument/vocal weirdness in the future...but I'm sure I'll still use sampling - I have too much weird old vinyl to ignore.

21. "Saturn Sea Organ" - the worlds' first sound-effects mashup? A "sea organ" (pitch-shifted to give it melody) vs radio emissions from the planet Saturn, I believe the same fx used on "What a Wonderful Sidewalk"

Crimson & Chanukah 2011

"Crimson & Chanukah" was a Tommy James & the Shondells vs Adam Sandler mashup from 2009 included on my holiday music collection "Mr. Fab His Bag O' Toys." Adrian from the globe-spanning mashup nightcub event Bootie covered it live by singing over a karaoke version of "Crimson and Clover," based on the Joan Jett version. He promised to record it. I saw him at Bootie a year ago and asked him about it. He forget! But here 'tis at last, track #6 on Boston's dj BC's long-running series of various-artist Xmas comps, and it is a lovely thing indeed (Thanks, Adrian!):

But, hey, it ain't all about me - lots of other great stuff on this collection: Martinn's mashing of two Brenda Lee songs and a Dixieland band is the kind of head-spinning nuttiness that only the likes of People Like Us can pull off. And my SoCal homie Voicedude's "You're A Loser, Newt Gingrich!" oughtta get him on the Daily Show.

...I'm gonna post an album's worth of leftover RIAA tracks when I get a new computer and all technical difficulties are resolved. Maybe 15 tracks or so. Featuring: some songs already released that were "singles," or contributions to various-artists collections, Such as:

That nice Ken The Station Manger at WFMU played one of my tunes on his show this morning, and someone posted a comment on the station message board that I thought was pretty funny:

"RIAA is amazing. Every mashup sounds like a dare and often he pulls it off, leaving your jaw to hit the table."

Haven't made anything because of a dare (tho I guess you could say I dare myself sometimes) but, hey, the highly entertaining "Manos: The Hands of Fate," one of the worst films ever made (if not THE worst) was made as a result of a dare. Maybe it's a ploy that should be used more often...

To celebrate the first anniversary of "USA," I finally got around to posting all the radio-friendly "singles" on official.fm (formerly known as Fairtilizer), so if you don't want to download the one-CD sampler of the 4-hour "USA", you can just listen to the songs streaming. (Or you can download 'em, official.fm gives you that option, too.) Just in time for July 4th - Independence Day, America's most patriotic holiday.

A collection of G.W.Bush/Iraq war related mashups and sound collages first released in 2004 is unexpectedly back on-line, courtesy of it's compiler twinkleboi.

RIAA's contribution is an otherwise uncollected track called "O.I.L. (Operation Iraqi Liberation)," which features The Misfits "Die Die My Darling", Jello Biafra "Die For Oil, Suckers," Big Black "Kerosene," Jimi Hendrix "Voodoo Chile," Black Sabbath "War Pigs," and Congressional sound effects. Technically, this antique is a bit crude. (Hey, I meant well, right?)

Fortunately, there's lots of great stuff from talents like Wax Audio, Osymyso, Eve Massacre, Instamatic, Don Amott, Earworm, Gordyboy, and RX, the mad genius who re-edited speeches to make it appear as if Bush is singing/reciting songs like U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday."

"Guess I'm Falling Into Bubbles," originally available on RIAA's 2007 collection "Risque, Illicit and Adult," is one of my strangest mashups. It features a U.S. Army Airborne marching cadence version of Don Ho's tiki lounge classic "Tiny Bubbles" over the instrumental of The Velvet Underground's "Guess I'm Falling in Love," with sound effects. Unexpectedly popular, it got lots of airplay on WFMU. And it's recently been included on a free on-line album compiled by Texas' DJ Useo dedicated to the more unusual ("off-kilter," as he says) mashups:

- RIAA's song "Wake Me Up When September 11 Ends" won WFMU's "Remix Rudy" contest out of 50 or so entries. The prize: a big box full o' CDs, T-shirts, trading cards, books 'n' things. Yay.

- Our 2006 album "Dirt Bacharach" made WFMU's Top Ten Albums of the Year list, and was ranked #1 on John Sakamoto of the Toronto Star's "Anti-Hit List" who described it as "one of the year's most startling full-length mash-up projects."

"USA" REVIEW IN 'TWILIGHT WORLD'

This might be a first - an actual print review of my tuneage. Yup, not an internet review. It's in the latest issue of "Twilight World," a good ol' fashioned 'zine (didn't know there were any 'zines still around in these bloggy times).

It's a review of "USA," calling it "one big piece of audio cake! Needless to say, the details and the soundscape are deep, expected, unexpected and dramatic!...and there's too many highlights to even think about listing here...well, that part where Michael Jackson vamps along with an old KKK recruitment song tackled my attention with a bloody nose. This bold example shows Mr. R's bravery and scope here; taking a small peek at the underbelly while looking far and wide to pin-point the collective character of our fair over-grown country."

It's already appeared in a couple of videos, and at least one haunted house (Frightmare Forest in Iowa) has used it. This tune gets around...

Someone posted the wacky RIAA mashup "Johnny SKAsh" (The Man In Black goes Jamaican, + lots of cartoon-ish sound bites) on YouTube, but it's not a video. Just a title card + music. So I'm not gonna add it to the "video" section.

And they titled it "RIIA" so it doesn't turn up if you do a YouTube search for RIAA mashups...but I guess any exposure is good, eh?

Had an interesting email exchange with a listener who accused "USA" of a far-left slant. I pointed out that I thought everyone was equally covered - that's one of the great things about mashups, you can present two (or more) views simultaneously e.g.: someone's satirical Nixon speech cut-up mixed with a pro-Nixon song. But he thought even the use of right-wing sources betrayed a bias because the material used made the right look silly. You can't win, eh? (It's all really just sonic mulch to me...)

Been getting some attention for "USA" from nice folks like:

Radio Clash, "UK's longest running-podcast" (not to mention an excellent blog) who correctly point out that, yes, I'm taking a breather from music-making for a bit. Can't say when I'll come back, but I hope "USA"'s lengthy length should keep you-all busy for a while.

Audio Porn Central - More European pals, who say: "We are speechless," heh heh; got a lot of hits from this one.

MetaFilter's readers left many cool comments e.g.: "...this really is one of those Whole Damn Point of the Internet moments."

I've heard that some radio stations (hello, Kalamzoo, MI!) have been playing bits of it but Googling 'RIAA' and/or 'USA' is a fairly hopeless proposition, so if any of you all hear it getting played somewhere, please leave a comment.

RIAA Presents "USA," a "Mix-Album" in 10 Parts

"USA" is a four-hour-long "mix-album," conveniently divided into 10 separate mixes. The history, geography, culture, and politics of the United States is all fair game for RIAA's musical collages, incisive observations, and cheap jokes.
The United States of America is a big subject, and I don't pretend to be offering anything close to a comprehensive overview of the country - this is a musical project. That is, an experiment in mixing and mashing any audio related to the U.S. There is material here that will seem controversial to some, but I'm not using "USA" as a soapbox. This isn't political satire, really, because that implies a point of view that the composer is trying to push, and I think of this more as a portrait. A surreal, fun-house mirror portrait perhaps, but nonetheless, I wanted to just let everyone speak for themselves.

By "mix-album," I mean a collection of mixes rather than a collection of songs. The mixes' length range from 15 - 30 minutes; the final mix is 47 minutes. Tho the mixes can stand alone, they are meant to be played in sequence. Many mashups are just "A + B." This album uses roughly 335 different sources, and that's a conservative estimate.

MR FAB "DUB & DUBBER"

"Dub & Dubber" is now back up - probably the best of my '90s/recorded-on-8-track-cassette primitive years. It's mostly live synths played over instrumentals taken from hip-hop 12" singles with, as you may have guessed by the title, a strong reggae influence.

When I transferred the tapes to mp3 and posted them on-line back in '04, one of the first great music blogs 'Spoilt Victorian Child' raved about it, calling it "genius." A lot of stuff on this album still sounds pretty darn cool to my ears. And some doesn't. Ah, well. Let me know what you think...

6. I Saw Her Things - Dean Martin & Nancy Sinatra vs dogs singing the Beatles, with a bit of Beach Boys. And beatz. Originally appeared on the Mashup Industries various-artists Dino tribute album “King of the Road.”
7. Eraserhead Serenade - Peter Ivors’ “In Heaven” (from the film “Eraserhead”) vs Crystal Method “Ready for Action” with a bit of Geza X: “Mean Mr. Mommy Man”. Originally appeared on the David Lynch tribute album “Mashed in Plastic.” Check the video.
8. Chicken Slacks - Sam Cooke vs Ray Stevens/Henhouse Five “In The Mood,” Soft Cell “Tainted Love.”
9. El Psycho Watusi - Ray Barreto, The Sonics, Bernard Hermann, The Beatles, Lords of the Underground; originally appeared on the “Bride of Monster Mashup” various artists comp in 2008
10. KKK2 (She Hates The Jonas Brothers) - David Rose & His Orchestra, Kelis, eminem goes to the circus, lots of funny little clips.
11. Some Assembly Required - The theme to the mashup/sound collage radio show “Some Assembly Required” vs a country song “Only in America” + wacky sound effects
12. Youre Pootyful - James Blunt vs Ming & FS “Madhattan Bound,” with Mickey Avalon “My Dick”, and rude sound effects.
13. A Golden Induction Is A Gust of Brown Air - RIAA mixed People Like Us’ poem cut-up contribution to WFMU’s Inaugurable Poem Remix challenge with The Stranglers’ “Golden Brown.“
14. Babar's Tusk - Fleetwood Mac’s “Tusk” vs a ‘Babar’ kiddie record, and some David Lee Roth; originally appeared on Radio Clash’s “Fleetwood Mix” mashup collection.
15. Spinning Rubber Sing Thing - Big Bird vs Ernie vs The Shaggs vs Cale & Eno; originally appeared on dj BC’s “Muppet Mashup” collection. (Thanks to BC for the Autotune!)

WOW. Big ups to Reborn Identity for making an 82 minute full length mashup movie (the world's first?) to accompany last year's "Mashed in Plastic," the David Lynch mash-up tribute album, which features RIAA's "Eraserhead Serenade." Check the 'Videos' link to the right if you just want to see "Eraserhead Serenade" but, really, the whole thing's quite stunning.

A very silly RIAA track, "Babar's Tusk," is featured on the "Fleetwood Mix" various-artists collection of Mac mashes and remixes, organized by Tim from RadioClash. Bits of David Lee Roth's whoopin and a-hollerin' are in there, as well. Thanks to kiddierecords.com for the Babar action.

London UK's legendary sound collage-ist People Like Us often features RIAA recordings in her WFMU radio show "Do or DIY," and this new best-of collection is no exception. "Spinning Rubber Sing Thing" is featured (towards the end).
